John Sartain Collection

John Sartain (1808-1897) was an English-born American engraver and painter. He is best known for his work in mezzotint, a form of printmaking that uses a roughened surface to create tonal effects. He was the first American to master this technique and was highly influential in popularizing it in the United States. His works included portraits of prominent figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin as well as religious subjects such as The Last Supper.
