Captain George Francis Lyon Collection

Captain George Francis Lyon was a British naval officer and explorer who made significant contributions to the development of Arctic exploration. He was born in 1795 and joined the Royal Navy at age 14. In 1818, he was appointed commander of the HMS Griper, which he used to explore northern Canada and Greenland. During his expeditions, he mapped much of the Arctic coastline and discovered several islands including Banks Island in 1819. He also developed a method for determining longitude using lunar distances that proved invaluable for navigation in polar regions. His achievements earned him recognition from both Britain and Russia, with whom he had friendly relations during his explorations. He died in 1832 after a brief illness at sea while returning from an expedition to Spitsbergen.
