Joseph DeCamp Collection

Joseph DeCamp (1858-1923) was an American painter and teacher of the Boston School. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and studied at the McMicken School of Design. He then moved to Boston where he became a student of Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson, two leading figures in the Boston School. DeCamp is best known for his Impressionist style paintings featuring landscapes, interiors, and figures. His works often featured women in domestic settings or children playing outdoors. He also taught at several art schools including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where he served as headmaster from 1904 to 1923. Throughout his career, DeCamp's work was praised for its technical skill and sensitivity to light and color. His influence on American painting continues today through his students who went on to become important artists themselves such as Childe Hassam and Edward Hopper.
