Charles Coypel Collection

Charles Coypel (1694-1752) was a French painter and art theorist. He was the son of the court painter Antoine Coypel, and he studied under his father. He also studied at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris, and later became its director. His works included religious paintings, portraits, mythological scenes and allegories. He also wrote several treatises on painting theory which were influential in the 18th century. His most famous work is “The Death of Socrates” (1724), which is now housed in The Louvre Museum in Paris. Charles Coypel's works are considered to be among some of the finest French Baroque painting from this period, and he is remembered as an important figure in French art history.
