Jacques Barraband Collection

Jacques Barraband (1767–1809) was a French artist and naturalist who is best known for his work in ornithology. He was born in Montpellier, France, and studied painting at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. After leaving the academy, he became a professional artist specializing in bird illustrations. His most famous work is the Ornithologie des Indes Orientales (1801-1805), which contains over 600 hand-colored engravings of birds from India, Indonesia, and other parts of Asia. He also wrote several books on ornithology during his lifetime. Barraband's work has been highly influential to modern bird illustration; his paintings are still used as reference material by scientists today.
