George Back (1796-1878) was a British artist and explorer. He was born in London, England, and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. He served in the Royal Navy from 1813 to 1821, during which time he explored Canada's Arctic coast. His sketches of the region were later used to produce maps for the Admiralty. After leaving the navy, he returned to London and began painting scenes from his travels. He also painted portraits of prominent figures such as Lord Nelson and Sir John Franklin. His work is still highly regarded today for its accuracy and detail. Back was elected a member of both the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours (1826) and The Society of Artists (1827).
