Ropaldia revolutionalis
This can be up to 20cm in length and usually has a double row of adjacent cells, each containing a single egg. The larva is fed on chewed-up caterpillars and the cell is sealed when the larva is ready to pupate. Small numbers of combs are built adjacent to one another as the colony expands, and they are usually placed low among the leaves of shrubs, or under the eaves of houses. / Body length to 12mm; one comb has up to 50 cells.

Buzzing with Creativity - Two Paper Wasps Master the Art of Nest Building!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Eric Lindgren, we witness the incredible craftsmanship of two paper wasps as they diligently tend to their comb-like nest. These industrious insects construct a vertical masterpiece using wood pulp mixed with saliva, hanging it gracefully from a stalk. Native to tropical and eastern Australia, these particular wasps belong to the Ropaldia revolutionalis species, with some even making their way down to Victoria. Their nests can reach an impressive length of up to 20cm and feature a double row of adjacent cells, each housing a single precious egg. As devoted parents-to-be, these wasps ensure their offspring are well-fed by providing them with chewed-up caterpillars. Once the larva is ready for its transformation into adulthood, the cell is sealed off until it's time for pupation. Expanding their colony one cell at a time, these resourceful creatures often choose inconspicuous locations such as shrub leaves or under house eaves for their small combs. With body lengths reaching up to 12mm and each comb boasting around 50 cells, it's clear that size doesn't limit their architectural prowess! So if you're looking for inspiration in nature's engineering marvels or simply want an awe-inspiring addition to your personal display collection, this enchanting print captures the beauty and dedication of these remarkable paper wasps. Just remember - no reproductions allowed!
