13132555. Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, drifting next to a dead leaf fallen

Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, drifting next to a dead leaf fallen from the mangrove. Young fish have a curious behaviour related to feeding and to protect themselves from the numerous predators of the mangrove. They assume a lying position allowing themselves to be carried immobile by the current, looking like a dead leaf. Its brownish coloration with dark spots further reinforces this mimic effect. They often assume this behaviour by placing themselves in the vicinity of dead leaves carried by the current as is the case with the animal in this photo. They live in shallow protected coastal waters to deep, somewhat silty habitats. Adults are found singly or in small groups and occasionally in large schools. Juveniles occur singly or in small groups among mangroves and inner sheltered lagoons while adults move out to open waters over sandy areas of deep lagoons, channels, and seaward reefs to a depth of at least 30 m. Leaf or Fish? The Ultimate Underwater Game of Hide and Seek!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this snapshot, we witness the incredible mimicry skills of the Orbicular batfish as it drifts effortlessly next to a fallen leaf in the mangrove. These young fish have truly mastered the art of deception, adopting a lying position that allows them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. With its brownish coloration and dark spots, our little friend perfectly imitates a dead leaf floating along with the current. This clever disguise not only helps them evade predators lurking in the mangrove but also aids in their feeding habits. Talk about multitasking! Living in shallow coastal waters to deep silty habitats, these fascinating creatures can be found either alone or in small groups. Juveniles prefer hiding among mangroves and inner sheltered lagoons while adults venture out into open waters over sandy areas. So next time you're exploring Kenya's mesmerizing marine world, keep an eye out for these masters of disguise! You might just stumble upon an underwater game of hide and seek like no other. Just remember, if you spot what appears to be a drifting leaf. . . take a closer look! It could very well be one of nature's most cunning tricksters – an adorable Orbicular batfish showcasing its mimicry prowess. (Photo credit: Mary Evans Picture Library)
