Akaroa Banks Peninsula - New Zealand.
Oryctolagus cuniculus
Rabbits were brought into New Zealand probably from Australia in the 1830s to provide game for hunting, food and to remind British settlers of home. Control measures have included Myxomatosis, cats (which had a disastrous effect on native species), and more recently Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (originally called RCD) which causes blood clots in major organs.

Akaroa Banks Cuniculus Introduced Introduced Species Invasive New Zealand Oryctolagus Peninsula Pest Rabbit Rabbits Wild Rabbits Zealand

EDITORS COMMENTS
Say cheese! This mischievous European rabbit from Akaroa Banks Peninsula, New Zealand knows how to strike a pose and steal the show. With its adorable fluffy ears and twitchy nose, it's no wonder these rabbits were brought all the way from Australia in the 1830s. They were meant to provide game for hunting and remind British settlers of home, but little did they know what trouble these cute critters would cause! Control measures have been put in place over the years to manage this invasive pest. From Myxomatosis to cats (which had unintended consequences on native species), humans have tried everything to keep their numbers in check. But even with Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease causing blood clots in major organs, this resilient bunny still manages to hop around. This print by Mark Boulton captures the essence of this introduced species perfectly - a symbol of both fascination and frustration for New Zealanders. So let's raise our carrots high and give a round of applause for this wild rabbit who has made itself at home Down Under!
