Harlem Hellfighters Return
Soldiers of the U.S. 369th Infantry Regiment parading down 15th Avenue, New York, on their return from service in Europe during World War I, circa 1919. Womens champion runs city cafe devoted chess
Women's champion runs city cafe devoted chess.
Sitting tense in a silence broken only by the rattler coffee cups, chess friends have found a haven in a City of London cafe, aptly named The Gambit in Budge Row.
The only cafe in the world dedicated entirely to chess, it is run by Miss Edith Price, who has been in Budge Row for 37 years and has herself been four times woman chess champion of Great Britain.
Many of the players come from all parts of London and some stay till well past midnight.
Photo shows, coffee cup in hand, a player thinks out his next move at The Gambit'.
