The Gila monster is a species of venomous lizard native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, and is one of only two species in the family Helodermatidae, and is the only venomous lizard native to North America. They are grow up to 2 feet long and weigh up to 5 pounds. Its body is covered with bead-like scales in a variety of colors, including pink, yellow, orange, black or brown and has a wide head with small eyes and short legs with sharp claws for digging burrows. Its diet consists mainly of eggs, small mammals, birds and insects but it also eats fruits and flowers when available.
