Goose Barnacles

Common Goose Barnacle, Cornwall, UK.
Goose barnacles have a long fleshy stem (like a black neck) topped with a white chalky shell. A type of crustacean, similar to lobsters and crabs, they filter feed on plankton and detritus. Often thought of as a delicacy, in the past ships would sell the Goose Barnacles on their hull at good profit.
They are also known as a Gooseneck Barnacle and are often washed up on the United Kingdom south-west coast

Goose barnacle, light micrograph

Goose barnacle. Polarised light micrograph of the body of a goose barnacle (Lepas anatifera). The goose barnacle is a Cirripedian crustacean. The pink stalk is derived from the elongated head and cements the barnacle to the surface. The rest of the body (brownish-black) is a carapace or mantle of five calcified plates. When the valves of the mantle open, the thoracic limbs (bright blue), hang out. The limbs, which are covered in fine bristles (cirri), are thrust in and out allowing the cirri to filter out small plankton which are then conveyed to its mouth. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres high
