Blue Crane Collection

Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus) is a species of crane found in southern and eastern Africa, and is the national bird of South Africa, where it is also known as the Stanley Crane or Paradise Crane. The Blue Crane stands at about 1 meter tall, with a wingspan of up to 2 meters. Its plumage is predominantly grey-blue, with a white face and throat, black legs and feet, and yellow bill. It feeds mainly on grasses and insects but will also eat small vertebrates such as frogs or lizards. Blue Cranes form monogamous pairs for life and breed during the summer months in large colonies near wetlands or grasslands, and are threatened by habitat loss due to human development such as agriculture, urbanization, mining activities, pollution from oil spills etc., as well as being hunted for their feathers which are used in traditional ceremonies. Conservation efforts have been put into place to help protect this species from further decline in numbers.
