Rodrigues Solitaire Collection

The Rodrigues Solitaire (Pezophaps solitaria) is a species of extinct bird in the family Columbiformes. It was endemic to the island of Rodrigues, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The species was first described by French naturalist Pierre Sonnerat in 1782 and is believed to have become extinct due to hunting and habitat destruction by humans. It had a large body, with an estimated weight between 1-2 kg, and its plumage was brownish-grey with black spots on its wings and tail. Its long legs were adapted for running on the ground, making it well-suited for life on an open grassland habitat. It fed mainly on fruits, seeds, insects, lizards and small mammals such as rodents. Unfortunately this unique bird could not survive human activity and became extinct sometime during the 19th century.
