Red Phalarope Collection

The Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius) is a small sandpiper-like bird belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is found in the Northern Hemisphere, breeding in Arctic regions and wintering mainly along coastal areas. The adult male has a bright red-brown back and white underparts, with black wings and tail. Its bill is long and thin, with a slightly upturned tip. During breeding season, it feeds on insects, crustaceans, mollusks and other small aquatic creatures. In winter it shifts to an almost exclusively planktonic diet of tiny crustaceans such as copepods. Its unique feeding behavior involves swimming in circles while rapidly dipping its head underwater to capture prey items from the surface of the water or from just below it. This species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its large population size and wide distribution range across much of North America, Europe and Asia.
