EDITORS COMMENTS
"In this evocative photograph taken on July 27, 1918, American troops are seen in action in the northern French town of Villers-sur-Fere, towards the end of the First World War. The ruins of a building provide a stark backdrop as the soldiers carefully advance, their helmets shielding them from the debris and shrapnel that still rains down from the damaged roof above. Armed with rifles, they move cautiously through the rubble, their expressions focused and determined. The town of Villers-sur-Fere had been heavily bombed during the war, leaving a landscape of destruction and devastation in its wake. The Great War had taken its toll on both the soldiers and the civilian population, and the battle-weary troops knew that every step they took could be their last. The tin roofs of the buildings, torn and crumpled from the bombardment, litter the ground, a testament to the destructive power of war. Amidst the chaos and destruction, these American soldiers pressed on, their resolve unbroken, as they fought to bring an end to the carnage of the First World War."
