The Sioux were once the principle tribe in Dakota, but by 1851 they had lost nearly all of their land to American settlers. Despite their valiant efforts to resist colonization, including a last great rising in 1876 led by their revered chief Sitting Bull, they were ultimately unable to prevent their own demise.
