White City Stadium EAW164317

White City Stadium, London. Originally built for the 1908 summer Olympics, it became the home of greyhound racing and hosted a number of other sports. Photographed here by Aerofilms in July 1966 set up for athletics. Two weeks later it played host to the World Cup match between Uruguay and France. The stadium was demolished in 1985

Mathorn (Mortham) Tower, County Durham

Mathorn (Mortham) Tower, near Barnard Castle, County Durham. A medieval house attached to a pele tower, said to have been built about the time of Henry VII (1485-1509). Altered in the 18th century, it is one of the best-preserved and most picturesque medieval fortified manor houses in the North of England. It is described in Sir Walter Scott's novel, Rokeby.
