Aurora from space

Aurora borealis. Coloured combined ultraviolet and optical image of an aurora borealis (northern lights) display seen from space. The aurorae are seen as a ring of light around the North Pole. The most active areas appear red, with less intense activity ranging through yellow to blue. Aurorae are caused by particles from the Sun (the solar wind) interacting with Earth's atmosphere. Earth's magnetic field channels the charged particles to the poles, where they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, causing them to glow.
