EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the famous mythological tale of Daedalus and Icarus, showcased in a tondo with a bas-relief. The artwork is situated within the enchanting courtyard of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, Italy. Dating back to the 15th century, this exquisite piece was created by Bertoldo di Giovanni during the Early Renaissance period. It beautifully depicts two adolescents, Icarus and his father Daedalus, both portrayed in their natural form - nude and vulnerable. The scene tells a cautionary story from Greek mythology; it showcases Daedalus constructing wings made of feathers and wax for him and his son to escape their imprisonment on Crete. However, despite being warned not to fly too close to the sun or sea, Icarus's youthful exuberance gets the better of him. As he soars through the sky with newfound freedom, his wings melt due to excessive heat from Helios' rays. Tragically, Icarus plummets into an untimely demise. The photograph itself was taken around 1963 by Alinari Fratelli as part of their extensive collection capturing historical artworks across Europe throughout different periods. This particular image exemplifies early Renaissance artistry combined with Greco-Roman influences prevalent during that era. With its intricate details and masterful craftsmanship evident in every stroke carved into low relief bas-relief style, this artwork serves as a testament to human creativity transcending time. It offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon timeless themes such as ambition versus caution while appreciating artistic excellence that has endured for centuries.
