1856 Alexander Assassinated Coronation Crowned Reforms Reign Serfdom Tsar Years Abolish

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of imperial grandeur as Tsar Alexander II of Russia is crowned in the Moscow Kremlin's Uspensky Cathedral on February 14, 1856. Alexander II, who ruled for 25 years until his assassination in 1881, is depicted in regal attire, surrounded by an array of dignitaries, clergy, and military officials. The coronation marked the beginning of Alexander's reign, which would bring significant reforms to Russia. Born in 1818, Alexander II ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Tsar Nicholas I. During his reign, he implemented a series of groundbreaking reforms, most notably the emancipation of the serfs in 1861. This marked the end of serfdom in Russia, a system that had kept millions in bondage for centuries. The reforms also included the establishment of a consultative assembly, the Zemstvo, which provided a platform for local self-governance, and the introduction of civil and criminal codes based on European legal principles. Despite the progress, Alexander II's reign was not without controversy. His reforms sparked resistance from conservative elements within the Russian Orthodox Church and the military, and his attempts to modernize the country were met with resistance. Ultimately, his efforts to bring Russia into the modern world would be cut short by an assassination carried out by a radical revolutionary group, the People's Will, on March 13, 1881. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Russian history, as a new tsar ascended to the throne with the hope of bringing reform and progress to his people. The image captures the solemnity and grandeur of the occasion, as well as the weight of the responsibilities that lay ahead for the young monarch.
