1867 Adam Sedgewick portrait

Portrait of Adam Sedgwick 1867. Sedgwick wrote a harsh review of a presentation of Darwins Origin of Species ideas in the Edinburgh review of 1860. He had written an even more scathing review of Chambers evolutionary " Vestiges of Creation" some ten years earlier. Darwin considered that few of the older generation of natural scientists, even those he had known like Sedgewick, would come around to his point of view on natural selection. Some believe it was this that caused him to delay publication for so long after he had the idea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1867 showcases the renowned geologist Adam Sedgwick, known for his strong opposition to Charles Darwin's revolutionary ideas on evolution. Sedgwick's critical review of Darwin's groundbreaking work, "Origin of Species" published in the Edinburgh Review of 1860, sent shockwaves through the scientific community. Even a decade earlier, Sedgwick had already unleashed scathing remarks upon Robert Chambers' evolutionary masterpiece, "Vestiges of Creation". It was clear that Sedgwick firmly stood against any notion challenging traditional religious beliefs and the prevailing understanding of creation. In this thought-provoking illustration by Paul D. Stewart, we witness a pivotal moment in history when science clashed with deeply ingrained ideologies. The portrait captures Sedgwick's unwavering determination as he becomes one of Darwin's most formidable opponents. Interestingly, Darwin himself believed that few older scientists like Sedgwick would ever embrace his theory of natural selection fully. This skepticism led him to delay publishing his groundbreaking work for an extended period after conceiving it. As we gaze at this remarkable artwork, we are reminded that scientific progress often faces fierce resistance from established minds. Yet it is precisely these debates and opposing viewpoints that propel us forward towards greater understanding and knowledge about our world and its intricate mechanisms.
