1829 Silhouette William & Frank Buckland 1829 Silhouette William & Frank Buckland

Silhouette first produced by Auguste Edouart of " William Buckland and his Wife and Son Frank, Examining Bucklands Natural History Collection. The original is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This copy is composited from a copy in " The Life of William Buckland" by his daughter Mrs. Gordon (1894). It shows the famous early palaeontologist William Buckland with a range of specimens including (hanging) an Irish Elk skull, in his hand a hyaena skull, on the table an ichthyosaur skull. Baby Frank is next to an elephant or mammoth skull. His wife Mary (ne Moreland) holds nautiloids. Bucklands Christ Church household was famously strange, he kept exotic animals including Hyaenas and a free range black bear called Tiglath Pileser who would raid local sweet shops, Frank - (Francis) Buckland went on to be a famously eccentric naturalist in his own right. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © This image is Paul D. Stewart 2009. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the essence of 19th-century palaeontologist William Buckland and his extraordinary world. Silhouetted against a backdrop of scientific wonders, Buckland stands alongside his wife Mary and their son Frank, surrounded by an impressive collection of natural history specimens. The composition showcases Buckland's passion for exploration and discovery. Hanging above them is the imposing skull of an Irish Elk, symbolizing the ancient mysteries he sought to unravel. In his hand rests the skull of a hyena, representing his fascination with extinct predators. On the table lies an ichthyosaur skull, evidence of his groundbreaking work in geology. Baby Frank sits next to a mammoth or elephant skull, hinting at the legacy he would later carry on as a renowned eccentric naturalist in his own right. Meanwhile, Mary holds nautiloids delicately in her hands, reflecting her involvement and support within this peculiar household. Buckland's Christ Church residence was no ordinary home; it housed not only their family but also exotic animals like hyenas and even a mischievous black bear named Tiglath Pileser who had a penchant for raiding local sweet shops. This composite image brings together historical elements from various sources to recreate this remarkable scene from Buckland's life. It serves as both an artistic tribute to one man's insatiable curiosity and as a testament to how science can shape our understanding of the world around us.
