Pendrill, a loyal servant, arranged for the King's safe passage to France, aiding him in his second escape by lowering a ladder from the tree and guiding him down to safety. The poem inscribed below the illustration pays tribute to Pendrill's unwavering loyalty to his sovereign: "Here Pendrill, with steady hand, The ladder to the King did stand, His Majesty, in disguise, Descended from the Boscobel Oak, To France and freedom, safe and sound, In Pendrill's care he was found."
