EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1927 features Wallis Simpson, also known as Mrs. Ernest Simpson at the time. She was pictured during her marriage to Commander Earl Wingfield Spencer of the US Navy, just before their divorce. Little did she know that her life was about to take a dramatic turn.
During her second marriage to Ernest Simpson, Wallis met and fell in love with Edward, Prince of Wales. Their affair led to one of the most scandalous events in British royal history - Edward's abdication of the throne in December 1936 so he could marry Wallis after her divorce.
The couple became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and lived out their lives together abroad. This photo captures a moment in time before all the chaos and controversy that would surround their relationship.
It's fascinating to look back on this historical image and think about how one decision can change the course of not only your own life but also that of an entire nation. Wallis Simpson will forever be remembered for capturing the heart of a prince and altering the trajectory of British monarchy forever.
