EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, German Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife, Augusta Viktoria, are seen making their grand entrance into Constantinople, now Istanbul, Turkey, in 1898. The imperial couple arrived by sea, disembarking from their ship at the quay, where they were greeted by the Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the last Ottoman Sultan to rule with absolute power from 1876 until his deposition in 1909. The Sultan, dressed in his majestic imperial robes and turban, stands with a parasol shielding him from the sun, while a sailor salutes and guards stand at attention. The crescent flag of the Ottoman Empire flies proudly above the harbor, symbolizing the power and grandeur of the once-great Turkish Empire. Kaiser Wilhelm II, dressed in his full military uniform, proudly salutes the Sultan, signifying the strong diplomatic ties between Germany and the Ottoman Empire during this period. The visit was significant as it marked the beginning of a new era of German-Turkish relations, which would continue to develop throughout the early 20th century. The photograph captures the majesty and historical significance of this official state visit, immortalizing a moment in time when two great empires came together in a display of diplomacy and power.
