Silhouettes from the Somme, WW1
When following on the heels of a retreating enemy, there is increased work for all. Here we have a squadron of cavalry returning from close contact with the enemy, a party of Pioneers mending the roads that have been mined, and the R.E.s making roads and rivers passable. Progress on our flanks is reported by the liaison officers attaced, and communication is suppied by the R.E. signallers.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and destruction of the Battle of the Somme during World War 1 in 1918, progress on the battlefield was a constant and arduous endeavor. In this evocative silhouette, we witness a squadron of weary Australian cavalrymen returning from a skirmish with the retreating enemy, their horses' hooves kicking up clouds of dust as they make their way back to their lines. In the foreground, a party of Pioneers diligently work to mend the roads that have been mined, their tools and equipment scattered around them as they focus on their vital task. In the distance, Royal Engineers labor to make roads and rivers passable, constructing bridges and repairing damaged infrastructure. Communication and coordination were essential for the success of military operations, and we see evidence of this in the form of liaison officers and RE signallers. The officers, silhouetted against the setting sun, confer with their counterparts on the flanks, exchanging vital information and updates. The signallers, meanwhile, work to lay and fix wires, ensuring that messages could be sent and received in real time. Despite the dangers and hardships, progress continued unabated. The soldiers plodded on, undeterred by the booby traps and other hazards that littered the battlefield. The image captures a moment of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fought and worked during the Great War.
