EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing 18th century print depicts the Indian Rhinoceros, or Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), as it was imagined by an artist of the time who had not had the opportunity to observe the creature firsthand. The misconception of the Indian Rhinoceros having scales is a common theme in European depictions of the animal during this era. The Indian Rhinoceros is the largest of the two Asian rhinoceros species and is native to the Indian subcontinent. Despite its name, it is not related to the unicorn, a mythical creature with a single horn on its forehead. This print, however, showcases the Indian Rhinoceros with the distinctive unicorn-like feature of a single horn, as well as an extensive covering of scales. The print, which is estimated to date from around 1730, is a fascinating glimpse into the historical understanding of the Indian Rhinoceros during the 18th century. European explorers and naturalists had limited knowledge of the animal, relying on descriptions and illustrations from travelers and traders. The inclusion of scales in this print reflects the misunderstandings and misconceptions that were prevalent during this time. Today, the Indian Rhinoceros is an endangered species, with populations declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Efforts are being made to protect and conserve this magnificent creature, ensuring that future generations will have a more accurate understanding of its true appearance and significance.
