Portrait of Princess Alice Maud Mary (1843-1878), Grand Duchess of Hesse, third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Alice married Grand Duke Louis (Ludwig IV) of Hesse in 1862 and had seven children. Among them were Alexandra, who became the wife of Tsar Nicholas II and Victoria, who married Prince Louis of Battenberg and was the grandmother of the present Duke of Edinburgh. Alices life was etched with tragedy. A natural nurse, she was by her father, Prince Alberts side, when he died of typhoid on December 14th, 1861. One of her sons died falling from a bedroom window in 1873 and her youngest daughter died of diptheria in 1878. It was while Alice was nursing her children through this that she herself caught diptheria and died at the age of just 34, seventeen years to the day of her fathers death
