EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Libyan cavalrymen charge towards Ethiopian soldiers during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in 1935. The Libyans, who had recently joined forces with the Italian army, were determined to put an end to the Ethiopian resistance. The Second Italo-Ethiopian War, also known as the Italian Conquest of Ethiopia, began in October 1935 when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini ordered an invasion of Ethiopia, which was then known as Abyssinia. The Italian forces, aided by Libyan cavalry and other African colonial troops, quickly advanced towards the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The battle depicted in this photograph took place near Gheratta, a town located in the central part of Ethiopia. The Libyan cavalry, with their horses and lances, charged towards the Ethiopian soldiers, who were armed with spears and shields. The Ethiopians, outnumbered and outgunned, were forced to flee in the face of the Italian-Libyan onslaught. The Second Italo-Ethiopian War ended in May 1936 with the capture of Addis Ababa by the Italian forces. Ethiopia was subsequently annexed as an Italian colony, a humiliating defeat for the Ethiopian people and a significant victory for Mussolini's regime. The war marked the end of Ethiopian independence and the beginning of a period of Italian rule that lasted until the end of World War II. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the military campaigns and political struggles that shaped the history of Africa in the first half of the 20th century. It offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this historic conflict.
