Henry, the son of King John Lackland, ascended the throne at a young age following the death of his father and the rebellion against his brother, Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. In an attempt to strengthen his position, Henry sought the support of the Church, granting privileges and lands to the clergy.
