EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Dennis, a renowned playwright and critic from the 17th century. Known for his sharp wit and insightful analysis, Dennis was more successful in his role as a critic than as a playwright. Despite this, he left an indelible mark on literary history with his writings on Shakespeare. Dennis was not without controversy, however, as he made enemies of some of the most prominent figures in literature at the time, including Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. His critical reviews were often scathing and unapologetic, earning him both admirers and detractors in equal measure. In this portrait from 1734, we see Dennis portrayed with a sense of gravitas befitting his status as a historical figure. The intensity in his eyes hints at the passion and conviction that fueled his work as a critic. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the lasting impact that John Dennis had on the world of literature. His legacy lives on through his writings and critiques, which continue to inspire scholars and readers alike to this day.
