EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard, dating back to 1917, captures the anti-Turkish sentiments that were prevalent during the Greek War of Independence and the subsequent Balkan Wars. The image depicts a disgruntled Greek soldier, his face etched with concern and displeasure, standing before a striking Islamic skyline. The soldier's uniform, complete with a fedora hat, a rifle slung over his shoulder, and a cane in his hand, exudes a sense of weariness and resignation. The Turkish influence, represented by the Islamic skyline, was a source of frustration for many Greeks, who longed for their city of Salonica (also known as Thessaloniki or Thessalonica) to be free from Ottoman rule. The cross on the soldier's chest serves as a symbol of Greek Orthodox faith and national identity. The postcard's historical significance lies in its ability to capture the complex emotions and tensions that marked this period in Greek history, as the country struggled to assert its independence and identity in the face of foreign powers.
