EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of triumphant return of the Duc d'Aumale, commander of the French forces, after the successful taking of the Smala of Abd-el Kader in Algeria in May 1843. The Smala was the encampment of Abd-el Kader, a prominent Algerian leader who had led a resistance against French colonization since 1832. The French army, under the command of the Duc d'Aumale, had been pursuing Abd-el Kader's forces across the plain of Mitidja for months. The victory marked a significant turning point in the French conquest of Algeria, which had begun in 1830. The Duc d'Aumale's troops had managed to corner Abd-el Kader and his remaining forces in the Djebel Amour mountains, and after a fierce battle, the resistance leader was forced to surrender. The triumphant procession depicted in the photograph shows the Duc d'Aumale and his soldiers riding through the plain of Mitidja, surrounded by their horses and flags, with the Algerian landscape stretching out behind them. The image captures the sense of jubilation and victory that must have filled the French forces as they returned from the battlefield, having successfully subdued one of the most formidable opponents of the French colonial campaign in North Africa. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of the events that unfolded in Algeria in the mid-19th century, and offers a glimpse into the military tactics and strategies of the time. The image also serves as a reminder of the complex and often violent history of colonialism and resistance in Africa.
