EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment when the French army, led by General Oudinot, entered the ancient city of Rome on September 20, 1849. The French troops, proudly bearing their national flag, march through an archway adorned with the Latin inscription "Salus Populi Romani Supremus Lex" (The welfare of the Roman people is the highest law). The iconic dome of St. Peter's Basilica can be seen in the background, symbolizing the spiritual heart of Rome. The French intervention came in response to the Roman Republic's plea for help against the forces of the Pope Pius IX, who had taken refuge in the Vatican after being ousted from power. The event marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Question, a complex diplomatic issue that would persist for decades. Amidst the grandeur of the Roman architecture and the pomp and circumstance of the French military, a stray dog wanders the streets, seemingly oblivious to the momentous occasion unfolding before it. The dog, a common sight in the streets of Rome, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of the city and its people, even in the midst of political upheaval. This photograph, taken from the extensive Mary Evans Prints Online archive, offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in European history, showcasing the intersection of politics, culture, and everyday life in 19th century Italy.
