EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in biblical history when King David of Israel brings the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem after its long absence. The Ark, a sacred relic and the symbol of God's presence among the Israelites, had been in the care of the Philistines since they had captured it during the Battle of Aphek (1 Samuel 5:1-5). Feeling uneasy about its presence in their midst, the Philistines had sent the Ark back to the house of Abinadab in the town of Kiriath-jearim (1 Samuel 7:1-2). David, determined to bring the Ark back to its rightful place in the Tabernacle in Jerusalem, assembled a large force of Israelites and set out on his mission. Upon reaching the house of Abinadab, David and his men were met with awe and trepidation as they prepared to retrieve the Ark. The image shows David, clad in armor and carrying a sling, leading the procession back to Jerusalem. The Ark, resting on a new cart drawn by oxen, is covered with the veil and surrounded by priests and Levites, all of whom are following the instructions given to them by God through the prophet Uzzah (2 Samuel 6:1-11). This historical print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich religious and cultural heritage of ancient Israel. The event of David bringing back the Ark of the Covenant is a significant one in the Old Testament, and this image beautifully captures the solemnity and reverence with which it was carried out.
