EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the image of Captain Charles Hamilton Sorely (1895-1915), a Scottish poet whose life was tragically cut short by the horrors of the Western Front during World War I. Sorely, who penned under the pseudonym "Marlborough," had completed his military training with the Suffolk Regiment in 1915 and was swiftly promoted to the rank of captain within just three months. However, his military career was short-lived, as he was fatally wounded by a sniper in October of that same year. At the time of his death, Sorely had left behind 37 completed poems, which were later compiled and published posthumously in the successful book "Marlborough and other poems" in 1916. The collection captured the raw emotions and experiences of the war, providing a poignant and powerful testament to the human cost of conflict. The photograph, taken circa 1914, shows a young and determined Sorely in his military uniform, gazing intently into the distance. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the statistics of war, and the enduring power of poetry to capture the complexities of the human experience. Sorely's legacy continues to inspire and move readers to this day, reminding us of the importance of remembering the past and honoring the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace.
