EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the armored train in action during the Finnish Civil War of 1918. The First World War had just ended, but Finland was embroiled in a bitter internal conflict between the Reds, who supported the Russian Bolsheviks, and the Whites, who sought to establish an independent Finnish state. The armored train was a crucial asset for the White forces, providing mobility and protection against enemy attacks. In this image, we see soldiers standing at the ready on the train's platform, their rifles at the ready. The train itself is a formidable sight, with its armored carriages and gun turrets jutting out menacingly. The steam engine at the front belches out smoke, adding to the sense of motion and urgency. The armored train was not only used for transportation of troops and supplies but also for offensive operations against the Red forces. The soldiers on board could fire their weapons through the train's armored windows, providing effective cover as they advanced. The train could also be used to lay down a barrage of artillery fire on enemy positions. Despite the harsh winter conditions, the armored train proved to be an effective weapon in the Finnish Civil War. The White forces ultimately emerged victorious, and Finland was able to establish its independence. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Finnish soldiers during a pivotal moment in their country's history.
