EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the annals of ancient history, Gnaeus Magnus Pompeius, better known as Pompey the Great, basks in the glory of his triumph after a series of striking victories in present-day Syria. The year is 65 BC, and Rome's most celebrated military commander has just returned from the eastern provinces, having subdued the rebellion led by the pirate king, Mithridates VI of Pontus, and annexed the kingdom of Armenia to the Roman Republic. The triumphal procession, a grand spectacle that marked the pinnacle of military success and civic honor, is depicted in all its splendor. Pompey, dressed in a toga purpurea, the richly decorated robe of a magister equitum or master of the horse, rides in an open chariot, his triumphal crown adorned with laurel wreaths and gold. His triumphal chariot is drawn by four white horses, their manes and tails flowing in the wind. Surrounding Pompey are his soldiers, clad in armor and carrying the spoils of war, as well as captives and prisoners of war. The crowd, a sea of cheering Romans, throngs the streets of Rome, their faces a mixture of awe, admiration, and envy. The triumphal arch, adorned with the spoils of the conquered lands, looms in the background, a testament to Pompey's military prowess and political influence. This triumphal image, a masterpiece from the Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to the ancient world, allowing us to witness firsthand the grandeur and pageantry of Rome at its height. It is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Pompey the Great, a man who, through his military victories and political maneuverings, left an indelible mark on the history of Rome and the world.
