Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk (1561-1626), was a prominent English statesman of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean eras. Known for his political acumen and diplomatic skills, Howard's personal life was marred by the extravagance and ambition of his wife, Katherine, daughter of the 4th Earl of Bedford. This historic photograph, featuring the autograph of Thomas Howard, provides a glimpse into the life of this complex figure. The inscription on the print reads "Thos Howard Earl of Suffolk," confirming the identity of the subject. The image itself is a testament to the grandeur of the English aristocracy during this period, with Howard depicted in the regal attire of an earl. However, beneath the surface of this impressive facade, Howard was struggling with the financial consequences of his wife's extravagant lifestyle. Despite this setback, Howard continued to serve in various capacities in the English government, including as Lord Chamberlain and Lord High Treasurer. The grand Tudor mansion, located in Saffron Walden, Essex, was one of the largest and most impressive houses in England at the time.
