EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the raw power and danger of a Nobel Stick of Dynamite, or Dynamite Cartridge, from the late 1880s. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, provides a glimpse into the military history of explosives during a time when dynamite was revolutionizing warfare. The Nobel Stick of Dynamite, named after its inventor, Alfred Nobel, was a precursor to the modern dynamite stick. It consisted of a long, thin stick of compressed gelatin dynamite, wrapped in a waterproof casing and sealed with a detonating cap at one end. The stick could be easily transported and handled, making it a versatile and deadly weapon. The image shows a well-worn Nobel Stick of Dynamite, its rough surface and faded label bearing the markings of past use. The stick rests on a wooden surface, with a small pile of sandbags nearby, hinting at its intended use in fortifications or trench warfare. The presence of a fuse and detonating cap attached to the end of the stick suggests that it is ready to be detonated, adding to the sense of urgency and danger. The invention of dynamite in the late 1860s had a profound impact on warfare, allowing for the construction of complex fortifications and the destruction of enemy positions with unprecedented speed and efficiency. However, its use also brought new risks and challenges, as the potential for accidental explosions and the devastating consequences of intentional use were both very real. This photograph serves as a reminder of the complex and often dangerous history of military explosives, and the ongoing efforts to harness their power for both defensive and offensive purposes.
