EDITORS COMMENTS
Once upon a time in the enchanting world of fairy tales, there existed a timeless story of love, magic, and slumber known as 'The Sleeping Beauty.' In this image by renowned British illustrator Lilian Govey, we are transported to a secluded attic atop an ancient tower. The room is bathed in soft, ethereal light, filtering through the dusty, cobweb-covered windows. An old woman, dressed in the traditional attire of a spinner, sits alone in the dimly lit space, her gnarled hands carefully working the spinning wheel. The scene is inspired by the classic fairy tale penned by Charles Perrault in 1697. In the story, the old woman, known as the Good Fairy, comes to the tower to bestow a blessing upon the newborn princess, Sleeping Beauty. However, an evil fairy named Maleficent curses the infant, causing her to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep. Govey's illustration masterfully captures the essence of the tale, with its intricate details and dreamlike atmosphere. The old woman's serene expression and the delicate spindle in her hand hint at the double-edged nature of the spinning wheel – a symbol of both creation and destruction. The image invites us to step into the magical world of 'The Sleeping Beauty,' where dreams and reality blur, and the power of love can conquer even the darkest of curses.
