This poignant portrait captures Sir Hugh Lane, the renowned art dealer, in the year of his tragic demise. Born in 1875, Lane is best remembered for his significant contribution to the art world, particularly in Dublin, where he established the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1908. However, history would remember him for a different reason in 1915. Amidst the backdrop of the First World War, Lane was aboard the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner, as a passenger. On May 7, 1915, the ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland, resulting in the drowning of over 1,100 passengers and crew members, including Lane. The Lusitania tragedy was a turning point in the war, as it was a civilian vessel and the sinking led to increased public outrage against Germany. Lane's death was a loss not only to his family and friends but also to the art community, as he was known for his extensive knowledge and passion for art. This portrait, taken in 1915, serves as a poignant reminder of Lane's life and his untimely demise.
