This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite for seven intrepid members of the Royal Naval Division (RND) during their service in the First World War. The RND, formed in September 1914, was created to support the army on land, making them unique among the naval forces of the time. Here, the sailors are seen outside their tents in a sunlit field, enjoying a well-deserved break from the rigors of war. The uniforms of the RND are distinctively different from those of their naval counterparts, with the men wearing khaki drill uniforms and leather helmets, reflecting their role as soldiers as well as sailors. The scene is reminiscent of a camping trip, with one sailor even seen smoking a pipe. However, this idyllic moment is a brief reprieve from the harsh realities of the battlefield. The RND saw action in numerous engagements throughout the war, including the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. The division was eventually disbanded in June 1919, marking the end of an era in military history.
