Soke was the capital of the Anatolian Turkish Beylik of the Mentese until 1426, when it was brought into the Ottoman Empire, still remaining capital of the Sanjak of Mentese. During the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922) resistance in the area was led by one Cafer Efe, whose statue is in the town. Soke was settled with Turkish immigrants from Crete during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Panoramic View of Soke, Turkey: A Glimpse into the Rich History of the Ancient Anatolian City Soke, Turkey, located in the Aydin Province, is a historic town with a rich past that spans across various civilizations. This panoramic view of Soke, taken around 1910, offers a breathtaking perspective of the town that was once the capital of the Anatolian Turkish Beylik of Mentese until 1426. The Mentese Beylik was an independent Turkish state that existed during the late Medieval period. Soke served as the political and cultural center of this Beylik, which was later brought into the Ottoman Empire. The town continued to be the capital of the Sanjak of Mentese, a district within the Ottoman Empire. During the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922), Soke became a focal point of resistance against foreign occupation. One of the prominent leaders of this resistance was Cafer Efe, whose statue can still be found in the town. The population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s led to the settlement of Turkish immigrants in Soke. This period marked a significant transformation in the demographic makeup of the town. This panoramic view of Soke captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the town's rich history. The Ottoman-era architecture, with its grand mosques and intricate tile work, stands in stark contrast to the modern buildings that dot the landscape today. The town's strategic location, nestled between the sea and the mountains, adds to its allure, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and travelers alike. This image is a testament to the enduring legacy of Soke, a town that has weathered the test of time and continues to hold onto its rich cultural heritage.
