Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850) and Sir John Archibald, Lord Murray (1779-1859), engaged in a conversation on the Royal Exchange in Edinburgh. Francis Jeffrey, a renowned Scottish judge and literary critic, is best known for his influential role in shaping Scottish literary culture through his position as the first editor of the Edinburgh Review. His incisive reviews, which often focused on contemporary literature and current social issues, significantly influenced literary discourse in Scotland and beyond. Lord Murray, a Scottish judge and politician, was a close friend and contemporary of Jeffrey. He served as Lord Advocate of Scotland from 1834 to 1841 and later became Lord President of the Court of Session in 1846.
