In this dramatic scene from Act 4 (Scene 2), titled "The Signing of the Compact," the central character Robert Liebig5, portrayed by the renowned tenor Adolphe Nourrit, is torn between his love for Alice (played by the soprano Adelina Patti) and the seductive allure of Bertram, the Devil, depicted by the baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure.
