EDITORS COMMENTS
Meyerbeer's 'Africaine' (Lib6): Act Five - A Bittersweet Farewell In this image from the 1865 production of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera 'Africaine' (Lib6), Selika, the queen of Madagascar, is depicted watching her husband, Vasco da Gama, sail away with Ines. The poignant scene unfolds in Act Five, as Selika sits under a manchineel tree, its deadly scent wafting through the air. Historically, Vasco da Gama was the first European to reach India by sea, opening up a new trade route between Europe and the East. In Meyerbeer's opera, however, the story takes a dramatic turn as Vasco falls in love with Ines, a Spanish captive, leading to a tragic turn of events. Selika, played by the renowned soprano, Adelina Patti, is seen here in a moment of heart-wrenching despair as she watches her husband leave her, torn between her love for him and her duty to her people. The manchineel tree, whose scent is known to be fatal, adds an extra layer of symbolism to the scene, representing the danger and uncertainty that comes with love and betrayal. The opera, first performed in Paris in 1865, was a critical and commercial success, with Patti's performance as Selika being particularly acclaimed. This image captures the essence of the opera's dramatic and emotional narrative, making it a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century opera and its exploration of love, duty, and the complexities of human relationships.
