Menelik II: The Lion of Judah, Emperor of Ethiopia (1889-1913) This evocative portrait captures the regal presence of Menelik II, the legendary Emperor of Ethiopia who ruled from 1889 until his death in 1913. Born in 1844 in the province of Showa, Menelik II ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Emperor Theodros II. He is best known for his military conquests, which expanded the Ethiopian Empire to its greatest extent in history. Menelik II is depicted in this photograph in a formal sitting position, wearing the traditional Ethiopian royal attire. The Emperor is adorned with a magnificent golden crown, symbolizing his divine right to rule. The cross on his chest is a reminder of the strong connection between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the monarchy.
