EDITORS COMMENTS
Medea's Revenge: A Classical Tale of Betrayal and Vengeance This haunting image depicts the tragic moment of reckoning between Medea, the sorceress and queen, and her former ally Pelias, the king of Iolcos. In the ancient Greek myth, Medea had once helped Jason, Pelias's nephew, to obtain the Golden Fleece, but was later betrayed by both Jason and Pelias. Desperate to regain her lost honor and protect her children, Medea resorted to the most gruesome of measures. She persuaded Pelias's daughters to believe that by chopping up their father and cooking him in a cauldron, they could restore his youth and save him from an impending old age. The belief in the power of magic and the promise of eternal youth proved too tempting for the gullible daughters, and they unwittingly carried out Medea's horrific plan. The grisly scene unfolds before us, with Pelias's lifeless body lying on the ground, surrounded by the remnants of his once regal attire. Medea, standing at the edge of the frame, watches the scene unfold with a mixture of satisfaction and sorrow. Her eyes betray a deep sense of loss and regret, as she realizes the terrible price she has paid for her vengeance. This historical print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a chilling glimpse into the darker side of classical mythology, where the line between love, loyalty, and vengeance becomes hopelessly blurred. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of betrayal and the lengths some will go to in the name of revenge.
